You are a Registered Psychotherapist in solo private practice in Oshawa. Owen Prentice, 46, has attended eleven weekly sessions. He came after his family doctor mentioned that he seemed low, and he pays through his employer's extended health plan, which covers eight more sessions this calendar year. You have worked in a cognitive behavioural frame: psychoeducation, thought records, behavioural activation, and a brief mood rating at the start of each session. His ratings are almost identical to session one. He returns the thought records blank or half finished and apologises warmly each time. He is never late, never cancels, and talks easily about his shifts at the warehouse, his two teenagers, the Leafs. When you have asked what he wants from therapy he has said, 'I just want to feel normal again.' You have recorded that as his goal. Today he sits down, takes the mood scale from you, fills it in without looking at it and hands it back. Then he says, 'Same as always, I guess. But I like coming here. It's the only hour where nobody wants anything off me.'
