Therapeutic relationship

You are a Registered Psychotherapist at a community mental health agency in Sault Ste. Marie. Martin, 24, has attended weekly for five months for depression and social isolation. He moved here from Thunder Bay two years ago after a relationship ended and, apart from shift work at a call centre, spends most of his time alone. He grew up in foster care from the age of eleven and has said that no adult stayed long enough to learn what he liked. The work has gone well. Martin has started swimming again and has spoken for the first time about his years in care. Over the past six weeks he has begun texting the agency's clinical line between sessions. The messages are brief and never in crisis: 'Made it through Sunday.' 'Pool was closed lol.' Last night at 11:40 he wrote, 'I know you're not on. Just wanted someone to know today was hard.' This morning the intake worker mentions that Martin stopped at the front desk last week and asked whether therapists are allowed to accept baked goods. Martin arrives for his session carrying a paper bag.
