You are a Registered Psychotherapist in solo private practice in Windsor, working in a cognitive-behavioural frame with adults. Most of your clients pay privately or through extended health benefits. Tomás Reyes, thirty-four, booked a first appointment on a Monday after his family physician suggested counselling. On the intake form he wrote 'stress, sleep' and left the rest blank. He arrives on time in work clothes, apologetic about the traffic, and jokes that he has never done anything like this before. Twenty minutes in he has described a separation eight months ago, an access arrangement he finds humiliating, and a disciplinary process at the parts plant where he works nights. He says he has stopped answering his friends. When you ask how he has been managing, he looks past you at the window and says, 'Honestly? Some nights I drive home and think it would be easier if I just didn't take the exit.' Then he laughs, sits up, and says, 'Don't worry about it. I'm not going to do anything stupid. I've got the kids.' There are twenty-five minutes left in the session.
