You are a Registered Psychotherapist in solo private practice in Marathon, a town of about three thousand on the north shore of Lake Superior. You are the only psychotherapist between Wawa and Nipigon; the nearest alternative is a two-hour drive or a video appointment. You rent two rooms above a physiotherapy clinic. The physiotherapist who owns the building, Dev, refers clients to you most months, and last week he suggested the two of you 'sort out something fair': fifty dollars for every client you send him, and half off your rent in exchange. A referral arrives from the nursing station for Dale Kowalchuk, 52, who has been having panic attacks since a fatal accident at the mill in June. Dale owns the only garage in town. He services your car, coaches your nephew's hockey team, and his wife sits with you on the library board. At the end of the first session Dale is warm and visibly relieved. He says the fee is no problem, and then adds that he will not be charging you for the brake work you have booked in for next week - 'call it even.' That evening, a follow request from Dale appears on your personal social media account.
